Performing Gender/Exhibiting Race

Studying intersections of race/gender in art since 1945 with host of visual subjects and methodological strategies. Examines works by e.g. Barkley L. Hendricks, David Hammons, Adrian Piper, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Faith Ringgold, Kara Walker. Traces theorizing gender/race through historical documents and contemporary writings. Focus on images in documentary and fine art photography; silent and sound film; broadcast television and video art past/present. Assorted critical writings on mass media imagery. Opportunities for introduction of artists, art works, issues external to syllabus. One course.
