Overview
Elizabeth Baltes is a Ph.D. candidate in ancient art and architecture, focusing on Classical and Hellenistic Greek sculpture. Her research interests lie at the intersection of sculpture, politics, and public space in the Greek world. In addition to her primary research interests, Elizabeth is also exploring the use of digital technologies to reconstruct and resituate ancient sculpture in the built landscape. Her review article, "The Aesthetics of Replication: Large Herculaneum Women Statues in Context," is forthcoming in the Journal of Roman Archaeology. She received her BA in Political Science from Louisiana State University in 2002.

Research Description
Elizabeth's dissertation, "Dedication and Display of Portrait Statues in Ancient Greece: Spatial Practices and Identity Politics," moves beyond the traditional approach to Greek sculpture to recontextualize individual monuments and to visualize entire statue landscapes. Her approach takes into account locational specificity and change over time, two facets of ancient statue dedication that are key to understanding the changing spatial, political, economic, and social meaning of statues. Elizabeth's work leverages digital visualization technologies, such as 3-D modeling and mapping softwares, not only as a means of representation, but also as a method of inquiry.
