complexity is a family tree by Sarah Riazati

As Robert Fitzgerald wrote in his journal in 1867, “The past is the key of the present and the mirror of the future.” As a documentarian, I am curious about archives, legacies, monuments, identity, and memory. I wonder what we keep, what we throw away, and why; how we categorize materials, and what purpose they might serve in the future. This work is about a family that is not my own, and it also about my own journey to understand the local, in search of home. In order to belong, we should understand where we are. In order to go forward, we should understand where we’ve been. In this work I am peeling back layers of a familiar landscape to read new clues in the city.
