Introduction to Film Movements

Introduction to Film Movements surveys major global film movements from the mid 20th century to the present. Through close analysis of films from Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas, students learn how filmmakers have responded to historical and political conditions in ways that have had a lasting impact on the cinematic art form. Screenings include films associated with movements such as neorealism, new waves, third cinema, poetic cinema, and slow cinema. Students also study film manifestos, theory, and criticism to develop critical and comparative skills, and a global understanding of film history.
