Paris-Milan-Moscow: Global Cities for a Global Avant-Garde

This course examines how three city spaces--Paris, Milan, and Moscow--shaped the global avant- garde in the Wrst half of the twentieth century. It introduces students to the cities' modern histories and analyzes each place's particular contribution to the avant-garde. It also examines how transnational actors (artists, dealers, curators, and critics) developed connections between the three places. The course draws upon major scholarship to study key avant-garde movements: Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, and Realism. Sculpture, mural painting, architecture, and mass media art will be the focus, as they had the broadest impact on city spaces.
