Primitivism, Art, and Culture


Seminar studies issues of primitivism in western culture, considering attitudes towards race and gender. Particular attention to the function of primitivism within modernist discourse—especially as regards such major figures as Gauguin, Matisse, and Picasso; and critical evaluations of the concept of primitivism in the fields of anthropology, literary criticism, cultural geography, and social history.
