Why Buildings Stand Up: A History of Construction Techniques from Antiquity to Modernity

The course provides a panorama of construction techniques from antiquity through modernity, spanning a broad geographical area, including Europe, the Mediterranean Basin, and Asia. The objective of the course is to ensure knowledge of different construction materials, techniques, and processes as well as to develop students’ analytical and research skills. Course materials will be organized thematically in sections dealing with building materials, such as wood, stone, bricks, concrete, steel, and reinforced concrete, as well as with structural choices, such as skeletal versus massive, hanging versus supporting, which will be discussed in relation to specific case studies.
