Emily Leon is an MA student in the Digital Art History program. Her research interests include modern art with a strong emphasis on marginalized religions and occult philosophies. Leon debuted Desert Suprematism in October of 2016, an online journal that presents essays and projects about visual artists, experimental musicians, and occultists who have been omitted from current art history pedagogy and academic curriculum. As a Digital Art History student, she is interested in developing a digital learning model that traces and acknowledges the complexities, influence, and relevance of esotericism and spirituality on visual art and artists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Before relocating back to the Triangle of NC, Leon worked in arts administration for organizations including SITE Santa Fe and the Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe (CCA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In addition to active intellectual labor, she is a performing artist, musician, and writer. More notable performances include five performances in Michaela Davies’ DUTY at CURRENTS: Santa Fe International New Media Festival and two performances with the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. Leon received her BA in Art History summa cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
