2010 – Art History

How has being an AAHVS graduate from Duke helped shape your professional success?

My Art history major did not have a direct impact on my legal career necessarily, but it was a course of study I enjoyed immensely while at Duke. As a result, I did well and earned good grades at Duke which made my law school applications stronger. More indirectly, my major also sparked my interest in restitution law, art crime, and artists' rights. I am not in that field now, but do like to follow what is going on in that world and perhaps will one day work on something related to those areas.

What advice would you give students in AAHVS?

For art history students, my main advice would be to study abroad. There is nothing like seeing the works of art you studied in a book for so long in person finally! I would also tell students to make the most of the Nasher museum and take any art history courses that tie into what the museum has on display in a given semester, if applicable.
