  • 12 to 15 courses, excluding language courses
  • 2 to 4 courses taken from other departments at Duke
  • Language proficiency in at least two foreign languages
  • Two tracks: Art History & Visual Culture or Visual & Media Studies
  • Preliminary exam
  • Dissertation
Master of Arts - Digital Art History
  • 18-month program
  • 10 courses taken over 3 semesters
  • Summer research
  • Written thesis
Master of Arts - Computational Media
  • 10 courses, including Digital Art History/Computational Media Proseminar and One Practice-Based Course
    • Two Graduate Seminars
    • Two Lab Practicum Experiences
    • Two Additional Electives
    • Two Thesis Credit courses
Master of Fine Arts - Experimental & Documentary Arts
  • 2-year degree program requiring 15 courses over 4 semesters
  • 10 required courses in prescribed sequence and 5 electives
    • 5 studio courses: Documentary Fieldwork, Experiments in the Moving Image, Computational Media, Thesis Writing Workshop and Thesis Project Workshop
    • 5 seminars: Continuity and Change in Experimental and Documentary Arts, Critique I-IV
    • 5 electives
  • Present project in a second year Spring MFA Exhibition

Juris Doctor/Master of Arts - Law & History of Art
  • All requirements of a juris doctor degree through the School of Law
  • Thesis or course-intensive tracks
  • 8 graded courses (24 units) focused on art, art history and visual studies, 2 of which may be taken in other departments
