Esther Gabara, E. Blake Byrne Associate Professor of Romance Studies and associate professor of art, art history and visual studies, curated Pop América, 1965-1975, which opened at the Nasher Museum on February 21, 2019 after previously opening on October 4, 2018, in San Antonio, Texas, at the McNay Art Museum. Gabara presented the opening curator’s talk at the Nasher Museum in February. The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual 216-page hardcover catalogue, edited and with an introductory essay by Gabara.
The first-ever Sotheby’s Prize was awarded in Fall 2017 to the Nasher Museum for Pop América. The Nasher is one of two winners of the inaugural Sotheby’s Prize, meant to support exhibitions that explore underrepresented areas of art history. The other winner is an exhibition of Middle East art at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Each museum will receive $125,000.
