Media, Technology and Politics

VMS 238S

Charts interplay between media, technology, and politics beginning in 19th century. Concludes in the digital age, with emphasis on social media and artificial intelligence. Course will also focus on introducing media research methods and visual literacy to students. Readings in a range of scholarly fields including history, science and technology studies, anthropology, media and visual studies, political science. Close work with a set of diverse global case studies (particular focus on the Middle East) and primary materials including documentary and feature film, radio transmissions, photographic archives (19th century-present) and digital media archives.
