This monograph is the first devoted to one of the greatest painters of Eighteenth century France. Through a triple perspective, it reconsiders Natoire’s achievements as a painter, a pedagogue, and the director of the French Academy in Rome. The result is a new understanding that challenges the image of Natoire established by the historiography as a decorative painter. Instead, this monograph shows how Natoire’s art is the result of a deep reflection over shared values—love and grace as social ideals—and visual models—the masters of the Renaissance and 17th-century.
